This online exhibition features a selection of artwork created in total isolation in Dartmoor national park. Olivia Longstaff’s work is situated somewhere between sculpture and painting, bearing the marks of the artist’s experience and surroundings. The entire series was created in a windowless boiler room, where the unconventional studio space offered freedom to exercise a unique method of production.

Digressing from her previous work, this series is smaller, reflecting Longstaff’s confined environment. The physical limitations forced Longstaff to reconsider her methods and experiment with new materials included detritus, kicked up or knocked off during the intense production. These discarded materials add a narrative to the works, physically incorporating fractured elements of Longstaff’s location.

This evidence of the maker is crucial to Longstaff’s process of production, in her words, ‘you get to a point, where you are still moving with it, a weird balance between falling apart and coming together.’ Like a semi-constructed building, the architecture of destruction is powerfully exposed to the viewer.
